Flames Tennis Suffers Losses To Visiting North Alabama

The Lee University tennis teams were swept by visiting University of North Alabama Saturday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Flames fell 5-1 to the 45th-ranked Lions, while the Lady Flames lost 5-2.

Both teams will get back on the courts on Mar. 23 against The University of Alabama in Huntsville. The GSC matches are scheduled for 2 p.m. starts.

NORTH ALABAMA 5, FLAMES 1

The Flames (6-3, 1-2 GSC) claimed one of the three doubles matches, but were unable to record any singles win as their six-match win streak came to an end.
North Alabama improved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Jake Okines and Boyd Blackburn were 8-5 winners at No. 2 doubles against Ray Donovan and Gustavo Girao. Rhys Milne and Igor Schattan took Max Druppel and Benjamin Poire into a tie-breaker before losing 9-8. Daniel Prata and Wes Lemke lost 8-5 to Miguel Garcia and Taylor Ausbon.

Teodor Deljanovksi lost in straight sets by matching 6-3 scores to Druppel. Milne and Schattan took their opponents to three sets before being retired. Milne lost his opening set against Garcia 6-2 and turned the score around to win 6-2 in the second set. Garcia held on for the win with a 6-4 margin in the final set. Schattan and Poire exchanged 6-4 scores to set up a third set where Poire pulled away for a 6-1 win.

The final three singles matches were left unfinished.

NORTH ALABAMA 5, LADY FLAMES 2

North Alabama (6-3, 5-0 GSC) carried a 3-0 lead following doubles competition. Donna Haycock and Claudia Arroyo were 8-2 winners over Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto. Ana Webber and Laura Beth Hardesty fell 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Joanna Grzegrzolka and Krista Good were doubled-up by Olivera Ngouabeu and Nele Seitz.

Lee (5-2, 2-2 GSC) fought back to win the first two singles matches to pull within one point. Tondi defeated Ngouabeu 6-2 and 6-0, while Grzegrzolka was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Arroyo.

Nina Linke posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Garcia-Nieto and Claire DeGeorge knocked off Hardesty 6-4 and 6-2 to claim the team win. The final two matches were unfinished.
