State Supreme Court Sets 2 Execution Dates

  • Thursday, March 15, 2018
The Tennessee Supreme Court on Jan. 18 set an execution date of Aug. 9, 2018, for condemned inmate Billy Ray Irick. On February 5, 2018, the State filed motions seeking execution dates prior to June 1, 2018, for eight other condemned inmates.  The Supreme Court has denied those motions.

However, on its own initiative, the Supreme Court has set execution dates for two of those inmates. The Court set an execution date of Oct. 11, 2018, for Edmund Zagorski, who was convicted of the 1983 murders of two men during a bogus drug deal and received two death sentences. The Court also set an execution date of December 6, 2018, for David Earl Miller, who was convicted of the 1981 murder of a mentally disabled young woman. Mr. Zagorski and Mr. Miller have had multiple previous execution dates.

The State’s February 5, 2018 motion also concerned six other capital cases: State v. Abu-Ali Abdur’Rahman, State v. Lee Hall a/k/a Leroy Hall, Jr., State v. Donnie Johnson, State v. Nicholas Todd Sutton, State v. Stephen Michael West, and State v. Charles Walton Wright.  In all of these cases, previous execution dates have been set. As of now, no new execution dates have been set in these six cases.

The orders regarding these cases are available online under Pending Cases, by the inmates' name. Additional information on pending capital cases is also available online.
