MLK Birthday Party Celebrates Youth Empowerment

  • Saturday, January 19, 2019

Olivet Baptist Church will host the Martin Luther King Birthday Party Celebration on Sunday, Jan. 20 from 4-6 p.m. at 740 E ML King Boulevard.

Sponsored by the Unity Group of Chattanooga, the program will focus on youth involvement in the March For Our Lives and Civil Rights Movements.

“We want children to understand that they have the ability to make a positive impact in their homes, communities, schools and their world,” said Program Coordinator Nicole Coleman.

The celebration will feature music, dance and a special tribute to the Parkland, Fl. students who lost their lives to gun violence.

“Generation Z has changed the conversation about gun laws in this country just like the children who were on the front lines in the Civil Rights Movement helped change the conversation about racial injustice and the American dream," organizers said.

Along with cake and ice cream, attendants can expect to see local children in leadership roles.

“I started this over 20 years ago because we didn’t have any scheduled events for our youth to get actively involved in,” said Unity Group Past Chairman Quenston Coleman. “It is important for the voices of the children to be heard across the nation. They have their own struggles and if we are going to do what’s in their best interest, we need to learn how to define those struggles from their point of view.”
