Roy W. Hicks, age 90, of Chattanooga, was welcomed into his heavenly home on Thursday, November 14, 2019.

 

He was born in Wasola, Missouri to the late Clyde and Delpha Beasley Hicks.  Roy received his BA Degree from Arkansas College and his master’s degree in Theology from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia.  Roy has pastored in many Presbyterian churches in Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Kentucky.  He was in the Lions Club in Somerset, Ky., and was a member of the Somerset Square Dancers.  He was known as a kind and gentle soul who was devoted to his wife, family and the churches he pastored.  His quiet brand of humor was a true trademark for his view of life. Roy loved music and sang in the Arkansas (Lyon College) Choir as well as the choir of many churches he served.  He was a master at whittling willow whistles for every child at church camps for many years.

 

He was preceded in death by grandparents, parents, four siblings and his great-granddaughter, Hope Marie McCoy.

 

Roy is survived by his wife of 68 years Mildred Maxine (Sharp) Hicks; children, Dr. Biram C. (Trudy) Hicks and Dr. Melissa Maxine (Ann Brown) Hicks; grandchildren, Evan Hicks, Sarah (Jonathan) Clardy, Nicolle (Scott) McCoy, Sarah Brown Duffer and Reverend Katherine B. (Garrett) Johnson; five great-grandchildren; brother, Doin Hicks; many nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

 

A Celebration of Roy’s Life will follow at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, at the North Chapel.  Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Clyde and Delpha Beasley Hicks Endowed Scholarship:  Lyon College to be used for student scholarships, or Xia-Gibbs Society, Inc. The Society seeks to provide support to and advocate for those with Xia-Gibbs Syndrome and their families to foster hope for the future.  Donations may be made to www.xia-gibbs.org.
