String Theory To Welcome McGill And Hristova For March Performance

  • Friday, February 22, 2019

String Theory, in partnership with Lee University and the Hunter Museum of American Art, will continue its 10th anniversary season with a concert featuring Anthony McGill, clarinet, Bella Hristova, violin, and Gloria Chien, piano. The concert will take place on Tuesday, March 5, at 6:30 p.m. at Mizpah Congregation in Chattanooga.

String Theory was founded in 2009 by Dr. Chien with the mission of exposing new audiences to chamber music, invigorating the local classical music scene, and cultivating a future generation of music lovers.

The upcoming concert, sponsored by Hefferlin and Kronenberg Architects, will feature the world premiere of “WingSpan,” a new commission by Grammy-winning composer Joan Tower. The performance will also feature Bernstein’s Clarinet Sonata, Foss’s Three American Pieces, Schoenfield’s Trio for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano, and Zwilich’s Fantasy.

Prior to the concert, Musical Dialogues will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Feinstein Hall area of the synagogue. Maestro Bob Bernhardt will lead an in-depth discussion with the musicians on their lives, inspirations, and the masterpieces being performed.

Mr. McGill, a String Theory favorite, is currently in his second season as principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic. Previously, he was principal clarinet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and associate principal clarinet of the Cincinnati Symphony. Mr. McGill is a faculty member of The Juilliard School, Peabody Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, and Bard College Conservatory.

He received the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the first Sphinx Medal of Excellence. In January 2009, Mr. McGill performed at President Obama’s inauguration with Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman.

Ms. Hristova has performed as a soloist with orchestras throughout the world, including the Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Lincoln Center, the New York String Orchestra, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, and Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra. As a chamber musician, she frequently performs with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

She has won a number of prizes and awards, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant, First Prize in the 2009 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, and the Helen Armstrong Violin Fellowship.

Dr. Chien, selected by the Boston Globe as one of its Superior Pianists of the year, “… who appears to excel in everything,” made her orchestral debut at age 16 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Recently, she has performed at Alice Tully Hall, the Library of Congress, the Kissingen Sommer Festival, and the National Concert Hall in Taiwan. Dr. Chien frequently performs with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.  She is a prize winner of the World Piano Competition, Harvard Musical Association Award, and the San Antonio International Piano Competition.

Dr. Chien currently serves as the director of the Chamber Music Institute at Music@Menlo, the co-artistic director of the Lake Champlain Music Festival, and the co-artistic director of Chamber Music Northwest. She is an artist-in-residence at Lee University, as well as a Steinway Artist.
