Jacobi Varner has been sentenced to serve 33 months in federal prison for being a felon with a gun.

His arrest came last June 25 when a Chattanooga Police officer pulled beside a car in which Varner was a passenger. The officer smelled marijuana and asked both men to get out of the vehicle.

Varner, who is now 23, tried to flee and was arrested. He said he ran because he had a gun under the seat where he was sitting.

He said he had bought the gun off the streets from an unknown person about two weeks earlier. He said it was for protection.

His prior felony was a robbery.
