To celebrate MLK Jr. Day, several volunteer projects will be happening at The Salvation Army. Southern Adventist University will be hosting a “Street Store” at 10:30 a.m. at 800 McCallie Ave. At the store, clothing and shoes will be hung on the gates of the property and Southern students will act as personal shoppers to assist the homeless with free clothes, providing them with a dignified shopping experience. The shoppers will have the opportunity to try on and select their own garments. Soup, sandwiches and entertainment will also be provided.
Approximately 90 Southern students, along with Salvation Army staff, will be volunteering at the event to assist with clothes and hand out free lunches to the “shoppers.”
The McCallie School will also be volunteering on MLK Day. Students will be organizing the food pantry, and cleaning The Salvation Army East Lake Center, 2140 East 28th St. The Girls Preparatory School will be helping in the Angel Tree Warehouse, 5001 Calhoun St., wrapping up Christmas efforts and organizing supplies. Projects will begin at 9 a.m.
“I love that these three schools are coming together on a holiday to serve our community,” says Lauren Russek, volunteer director at The Salvation Army. “Giving back to the community goes beyond what students can learn in the classroom, and we are grateful for their partnership in the ‘fight for good.’”
