Richard Barnum Dixon
Richard Barnum Dixon, 94, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away on July 3, 2025.
Born in McMinn County, where he was known as Barnum, Richard enjoyed an adventurous childhood, swimming in the Lost Sea before it was a tourist attraction, greeting the Mayfield ice cream truck at the end of the delivery day to receive leftovers, and witnessing the patriotic rebellion of citizens and WWII veterans against a corrupt local government in the Battle of Athens. In 1951, Richard and his young bride, Edanna Shell Dixon, relocated to Chattanooga where he embarked on a 35-year career with DuPont. Richard served in the Army and Air National Guard, volunteered with Red Bank youth sports, Junior Achievement, and the Salvation Army, bringing along his grandchildren to ring the bell at Christmas. UT Vols football was his lifelong favorite pastime. In retirement he sold real estate, pursued woodworking, golf, and never missed events involving his children and grandchildren.
Richard was predeceased by his mother, Gladys Dixon, and his brother, Jack C. Dixon.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Edanna Shell Dixon, and three children: Rick Dixon (Gina); Tom Dixon (Diane), and Kim Dixon Farr (Skip). He was "Big Daddy" to seven grandchildren, Rachel Capiz (Jesus), Amy Dixon, John Dixon (Jenni), Gaby Dixon, Drew Farr (Maddie), Lucas Farr, Abby Hansen (Peyton), and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday July 8, at noon at the Coulter Chapel of the Lane Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
