As the Independence Day weekend approaches, many of us are again concerned about the irresponsible actions of drunk/impaired drivers who carelessly risk their lives and the lives of others by driving while under the influence. Tennessee has recently passed enhanced penalties for repeat offenders, as I understand it, and such penalties are appropriate.
However, penalties will not restore human lives that are destroyed by carelessness, but simple personal responsibility can prevent a tragedy. If you have been drinking or using other substances, simply do not drive a vehicle, motorcycle or boat. Ask someone to give you a ride.
Personal responsibility is becoming a dying commodity, with the tragic result that human beings are literally dying as a result.
Don't drive if you can't drive right.
