Joe Biden criticizes President Trump for playing two rounds of golf for the first time since the Covid crisis began three months ago. Does Uncle Joe actually think this is the first time a POTUS has taken a break from the pressures of the office during a crisis? Joe has probably forgotten a President named Franklin Delano Roosevelt who served during the depression and WW ll. Here are some of his vacations:
June 1933- fishing trip to Campobello Island. Only 3 months after he was sworn in and millions of his fellow Americans suffering from the depression , he is fishing?
April 1934- fishing trip to the Bahamas
July 1934- 3 months later he vacations in Hawaii, so while Americans are suffering through the Great Depression he takes 3 fishing trips in the first 16 months in office
March 1936- another trip to the Bahamas,
August 1938- vacations in the Caribbean
August 1939 - fishing trip to Newfoundland
In addition from 36-45 he spent numerous days on the Presidential Yacht Potomac cruising up and down the Potomac.
May 1944- while preparations for D-Day are going on FDR was vacationing in South Carolina at Bernard Baruch's plantation.
Among his companions was his long time mistress Lucy Mercer Rutherford.
And the President took 16 trips to Warm Springs, Ga, to take to the waters to help with his polio. Each trip was usually for 2-3 weeks. His final trip in April 1945 was when he died with Lucy Rutherford in attendance.
There is no comparison to the trips taken by FDR and modern day Presidents . The transportation and communication advancements of today dwarf those in the 30s and 40s. The POTUS today is always in the office. But every President of any time needs some down time to face the emergencies they encounter in office.
I mean in no way to disparage FDR for his frequent vacations while in office. IMHO he is the greatest Commander in Chief we ever had and did a marvelous job of winning WW ll. Only Sir Winston Churchill was a more important figure of the 20th century.
