Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation, in collaboration with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, has launched a new physical therapy residency program, focused on the field of Geriatric Physical Therapy.
With only one other geriatric physical therapy residency in Tennessee and less than 30 across the country, Siskin Hospital recognizes the growing need for therapists specialized in geriatric care. The first resident is scheduled to begin the year-long program in August 2025, and upon graduation be prepared to sit for their board certification as a Geriatric Clinical Specialist.
“Not only will this program increase access to specialized care for patients living with a geriatric condition, it will also improve the quality of care we provide here at Siskin Hospital,” said Matt Annessi, PT, DPT, NCS, director of Siskin Hospital’s residency programs.
This program aims to educate clinicians to provide specialized care and advocate for the well-being of geriatric patients in the greater Chattanooga area.
The U.S. Census estimates that over 18% of Hamilton County’s population is comprised of people ages 65 and older. Within the decade, seniors are projected to make up a full 21% of the county’s population.
In addition to the Geriatric Physical Therapy Residency Program, Siskin Hospital also offers a Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency Program, one of only two in the state. As of July 2025, the program holds a 100% graduation and Neurologic Clinical Specialist board certification passing rate.
