Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics announces that Ronald Mitchell, MD, MBA, fellowship trained hand and upper extremity specialist has joined our team.

Officials said, "Dr. Mitchell is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with advanced fellowship training in hand and upper extremity care. He brings over a decade of experience caring for patients with complex musculoskeletal injuries, combining surgical expertise with a patient-centered approach. He specializes in arthritis, fracture care, nerve compression, sports injuries and ligament and tendon injuries."

“We couldn’t be happier to welcome Dr.
Ronald Mitchell to our team at Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics. He was highly sought after by multiple practices and brings a wealth of experience and advanced training that will strengthen the care we provide, especially in hand and upper extremity surgery,” says CEO Becky Farmer. “More than that, his advanced training and experience will complement our outstanding hand surgeons, and we know he will be a tremendous asset to the Chattanooga community. We’re excited for our patients to get to know him.”

A graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine, Dr. Mitchell completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Houston Methodist Hospital before serving as a staff surgeon and department head in the United States Navy. His military career took him from North Carolina to Naples, Italy and Afghanistan, where he provided life-saving care in both advanced medical centers and austere combat environments. For his service, he received numerous commendations, including the Navy Commendation Medal with combat “C” device.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Mitchell earned an MBA from the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, reflecting his commitment to advancing healthcare delivery and patient safety. His research has been published in leading orthopaedic and sports medicine journals, with a focus on innovative surgical techniques and outcomes for athletes.

Dr. Mitchell has most recently completed a fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute. He is dedicated to helping patients regain function and return to the activities they enjoy most.

Outside of medicine, he enjoys woodworking, exploring world cuisines through cooking, and traveling with an eye for culture and history. Patients appreciate his approachable nature, attention to detail and the depth of experience he brings to every consultation, officials said.

“I’m excited to join Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics because of its reputation for excellent care and strong sense of community. As a hand and upper extremity surgeon, I hope to help people return to the activities they need, want and love to do—whether that’s work, hobbies or everyday tasks,” Dr. Mitchell says. “Our hands and arms are essential to how we live and interact with the world, and I look forward to serving Chattanooga by restoring that function and being part of such a supportive team.”
