The City of Cleveland announced Tuesday a new initiative to create an official Arts and Entertainment District that will serve as a hub for "cultural expression, community engagement and regional tourism."
Officials said, "The City will establish a steering committee of diverse stakeholders – including representatives from local arts organizations, business leaders and community partners – who will work alongside city staff to guide the development of the district. The committee’s purpose will be to ensure that the district reflects Cleveland’s unique culture, fosters creative opportunities and supports economic growth through the arts and entertainment sector."
“The creation of an Arts and Entertainment District marks an important step forward for Cleveland,” said Mayor Kevin Brooks.
“This district will promote the arts, support the development of venues and events, strengthen our regional identity and enhance opportunities for both residents and visitors to enjoy all Cleveland has to offer.”
Officails said, "The district is envisioned as a vibrant area that will: promote the arts by showcasing local artists, performers and cultural organizations; support development of music, theater, film and live entertainment venues that boost quality of life and attract visitors; and market Cleveland as a destination for cultural enrichment, entertainment and tourism.
"Residents, businesses and community members will be invited to provide input as plans progress to ensure that the district reflects local values while positioning Cleveland as a dynamic destination for creativity and culture.
"The steering committee is expected to convene this fall, with initial recommendations presented to the Cleveland City Council in a few months."
“This effort goes beyond entertainment – it’s an investment in placemaking, economic vitality and the creative spirit that makes Cleveland special,” said City Manager Joe Fivas.
