String Theory To Present String Theory @ Home Virtual Concert

  • Wednesday, February 10, 2021

String Theory at the Hunter, in partnership with Lee University and the Hunter Museum of American Art, will continue it twelfth season with String Theory @ Home, a virtual concert featuring an all-star performance. The event will premiere on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., following a pre-concert Backstage Pass at 6 p.m. to visit with the artists.

Along with Artistic Director Gloria Chien on piano, musicians Edward Arron, cello, Jennifer Frautschi, violin, Paul Neubauer, viola, and Thomas Van Dyck, bass, will perform Schumann’s Piano Trio No. 1 and Fauré’s Piano Quartet No. 1 for a “magical musical evening.”

Review for the performers:

Making her String Theory debut, two-time Grammy nominee and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient Ms. Frautschi has garnered worldwide acclaim as a musically adventurous violinist with a wide-ranging repertoire. “Frautschi is molding a career with smart interpretations of both warhorses and rarities,” says the Chicago Tribune. Equally at home in the classic and contemporary repertoire, her recent seasons have featured innumerable performances and recordings. She has also had the privilege of premiering several new works composed for her by prominent composers of today.

Mr. Neubauer's musicality and effortless playing led the New York Times to call him “a master musician.” Appointed principal violist of the New York Philharmonic at age 21, he has appeared as a soloist with over 100 orchestras. A two-time Grammy nominee, he has recorded on numerous labels including Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, RCA Red Seal, and Sony Classical. Mr. Neubauer is the artistic director of the Mostly Music series in New Jersey and is on the faculty of The Juilliard School and Mannes College.

Mr. Arron has garnered recognition worldwide for his elegant musicianship, impassioned performances, and creative programming. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Arron made his New York recital debut in 2000 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since that time, he has appeared in recital, as a soloist with major orchestras, and as a chamber musician throughout Asia, Europe, and North America.

Mr. Van Dyck joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra's double bass section in 2013. An avid chamber musician and recipient of the Maurice Schwarz Prize at Tanglewood and the Lorraine Hunt Lieberson Prize, he has played chamber music around the world. He is a founding member of A Far Cry and a current member of East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO) that tours under Frank Salomon Management. In addition to enjoying a diverse performing career, he is on the faculty of the New England Conservatory.

Dr. Chien is the co-artistic director of Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Or., as well as the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival in Burlington, Vt., along with her husband, Soovin Kim. For the last decade, she was the director of the Chamber Music Institute at Music@Menlo. Dr. Chien frequently appears with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and is a Steinway Artist. She also serves as an artist-in-residence at Lee University.

There will be no fee for the String Theory @ Home concert, and all are welcome to view.

The performance will premiere online on the String Theory website, Facebook, and YouTube. It will also be rebroadcast on television at WTCI-TV Channel 45 on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m. and on radio WSMC 90.5 FM on Sunday, March 7, at 4 p.m.

This is the first installment of a two-part concert, with the second taking place on Tuesday, April 13.

String Theory was founded in 2009 by Dr. Chien to expose new audiences to chamber music, invigorate the local classical music scene, and cultivate a future generation of music lovers.
