On Thursday, February 4, 2021, Donald Phillips, a loving husband, and father of five children passed and entered Heaven at age 82.  Don is now free from the confusion and suffering of dementia.

Don leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Virginia Phillips.

Don was born on May 30, 1939, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Sterling and Ruth Phillips and was the youngest of five sons. He attended Arlington Tech High School and Butler University in Indianapolis.

Don was an entrepreneur in retail businesses including Montgomery Wards, IGA Grocery Stores, and several convenience stores in the Midwest.

Don married Virginia Talent on September 30, 1959; they raised five sons, owned several businesses, and traveled the southern United States. Whether working in the yard, renovating a residence, or gardening, Don enjoyed his wife’s companionship immensely.

Donald was a kind, gentle, caring, and Christian man. Don was known for his quick wit, always-present smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit. He was passionate about music and liked collecting albums, leading the church choir, and learning new songs. Don enjoyed an annual fishing retreat with his sons, bird watching, and being outdoors. He read historical books and explored Civil War parks in and around Chattanooga.  Don loved animals, especially dogs, but had one cat, “Mooch”, as his beloved pet.

Donald was preceded in death by his oldest son, Stephen A. Phillips. He is survived by sons, Mark Phillips, Sam Phillips, Joseph Phillips (Natalie), Benjamin Phillips (Laura), and multiple grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A celebration of Donald’s life is being planned and will be announced soon.
