The Covenant men's soccer team got the 3-1 win over Huntingdon Saturday afternoon. The victory improves the Scots to 3-1 in conference play and retains their first place standing in the USA South.
The visiting Hawks wasted no time, as they scored their first and only goal in the third minute of play. The goal was scored by Kelan LeBlanc.
The Covenant defense would take over the rest of the first period, though, not allowing another Huntingdon shot. The Scots would get off 13 shots in comparison and score the tying goal in the 34th minute.
Assisted by Kade Theunissen, Knox Gibson got one past Huntingdon goalie, Joshua Burton, tying it 1-1.
It was Gibson's second goal in the last three contests.
Covenant would then take the lead in the 72nd minute after Anthony Calbo scored, again being assisted by Theunissen. The goal made it a 2-1 game with under twenty minutes of play remaining.
The Scots' defense remained strong, only allowing the Hawks four total shots in the second period.
And the hard work paid off, as Covenant's third goal was scored by Keegan Weekley in the 85th minute, sealing the 3-1 victory for the Scots.
Covenant recorded 26 total shots for the contest, compared to five shots for Huntingdon. Mercer Stout led the Scots with eight shots. Gibson, Calbo, and Weekley all were 1-for-2. Theunissen recorded two assists.
Henry Hooks got the start in the goalie box for Covenant and earned three saves on four shots on goal. Hooks played for the duration of the contest.
Burton had four saves on seven shots on goal and also played the entire 90 minutes.
