The Moccasin Bend Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution presented the Excellence in Community Service Award to Kimberly Poe Gray for her dedication and countless hours volunteering at Poe's Tavern and Park in Soddy Daisy.
The original tavern was built in 1817 by her third great-grandfather, Hasten Poe, a veteran of the War of 1812, and son of Samuel Poe, a Revolutionary Patriot. The tavern was a way station during the Cherokee Removal and later a hospital for Union and Confederate troops during the Civil War, and served as the first county seat for Hamilton County.
Mrs. Gray is also a talented artist, and carved the mantel for the tavern which was rebuilt in 2012 on the original footprint.
