Our community sadly lost a pillar on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 when Mrs. Betty Green Helms, favorably known as “JoJo”, passed away at the age of 74.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Julius Tommy Green; parents Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Higgins (Dink & Katherine) and sister Barbara Davis.

She is survived by her husband, Paul M. Helms and her siblings, Ronald L. Higgins and Becky O’Dell.

Betty’s spirit is carried on by her three children – Marty (Debra) Green, Marcia (Dean) Jerding, and Matt (Jenny) Green; seven grandchildren - Thomas (Ellys) Green, Tanner Green, Carson Jerding, Bailey Green, Lexi Jerding, Cambell Green, Lainey Jerding; two great-grandchildren- Rollins Green, Brooks Green; and an extended family of relations and friends from every walk of life.

For over 50 years, Betty was well-known in the community as a master hair stylist and business owner. In her retirement, she enjoyed playing golf and spending time with family and friends.

She was a strong, resilient, and fiercely independent woman. All of whom knew and loved her dearly, will never forget her tenacity, wit, humor, grace (when pertinent) and undying love and caring for them.

She had a love affair with boasting about her beautiful grandchildren, shopping, visiting the nail salon, going to the beach, and golfing with her girls.

So many were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from JoJo during her 74 years:  She was a fabulous cook including anyone at her table.  She gardened and canned veggies, jams and sauces to share with family and friends. Her work ethic was modeled daily in how she pursued her career and took care of family and friends.

Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone she interacted with.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the Ronald McDonald House.

Please join us in celebrating Jojo’s life on Sunday, Aug. 8, from 1–3 p.m. immediately followed by a service at the Hamilton Funeral Home at 4506 Hixson Pike, Chattanooga.
