PREP BASKETBALL ROUND-UP: Walker Valley Edges Bradley On Coates' Last Second Basket

Bearettes Win; McCallie, Silverdale Grace, Ooltewah Boys Post Wins

Walker Valley overcame a two-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter at home Tuesday night against Bradley to pull out a narrow 46-44 District 5-AAAA win. The Mustangs’ win tightens up the district standings, moving Walker Valley 18-9 and 6-4 in the district while the Bears fell to 14-10 and 6-5.

With the score tied at 44 and just five seconds left in the contest, the Mustangs’ Cash Coates hit a layup off of an assist by Hobart Brabson to seal the rivalry win. Earlier, Bradley’s Trevor Carpenter had tied the game on a basket in the paint off a Mustangs’ turnover.

Coates paced the Walker Valley win with a game-high 22 points. Teammate Spencer Jackson had 12. Brandon Shumbera led the Bears with 13, while Aiden McClary had 12 and carpenter finished with 10.

The Mustangs outrebounded their opponents by a 21-14 margin, and received 34 points from their bench to Bradley’s three. Walker valley shot a hot 57.1 percent for the game.

Bradley girls 82, Walker Valley 40: The Bearettes kept their district record spotless as they blistered Walker Valley behind double-digit performances from five players.

At the end of one quarter of play, the Lady Mustangs were close, only trailing by four. The scoring dam then burst and Bradley rang up 63 points in the next 24 minutes of competition, all while holding Walker Valley to only 25. Hannah Jones led the Bearettes with 16, Ashlan Crittenden had 13 and Sloan Carpenter, Karsee Weber and Avary Brewer each netted 10.

Ashlyn Pierce scored 11 for the Lady Mustangs, who gave up 50 points in the paint to Bradley.

McCallie 64, CCS 33: The Blue Tornado dismantled CCS in a DII-AA East Region game played at McCallie’s Student Activity Center. The game pushed McCallie to 3-3 (20-4 overall) in the tight region standings and left the Chargers winless in five region contests.

David Craig led the Blues with 18 points, while Wilson Rankin and Kollin Claridy each had 11 points. Levi Lubbers had 13 for CCS.

Silverdale 74, St. Andrew’s-Sewanee 31: The number three seeded Seahawks enjoyed a combined 38 points from Brett Wright, Kennedy Okpara and Houston Holland to blow past number six St. Andrew’s in a first round DII-A East Region District 2 tournament game at the Silverdale Center.

Wright led the way with 15, while Okpara knocked in 12 and Holland celebrated his birthday with 11 to lead the win. Silverdale will face number two Boyd Buchanan on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at Silverdale.

Grace boys 44, Collegedale 23: number five Grace upset number four Collegedale in the other DII-A District 2 tournament game played on the Eagles hardwood. Mason Long poured in 21 points to lead the Golden Eagles to the win. Pierce Smith added 10.

Grace is set to face number one seed Notre dame on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Ooltewah boys 80, Rhea Co. 77: The Owls fought back from three-point deficit at the end of the third period to tie the contest at 70 all and send the game into overtime at Ooltewah.

Ooltewah’s Deleon Petty scorched the nets for 32 points and teammate Keyshawn Corbin poured in 21 to pace the win. Trey Laster added 11 and Chris styles 10 for the Owls. Five Eagles scored in double figures with Kyler Akin leading the way with 17. Bryce Dupree had 16, Gavin Roddy added 14, Kaleb Martin 13 and Austin Brackett 11 for Rhea.

 Hixson girls 46, Berean Academy 44: The Lady Cats edged Berean in a non-district contest as Anna Johnston scored 15 and Bre collier added 12.

Chattanooga Prep 62, Lookout Valley JV 24: The Sentinels moved to 4-1 in District 5-A with a win over the Lookout Valley JV. Jackson Marsh led all scorers with 14 points for the Yellow Jackets.

Kyrell Randolph and Dominic Johnson each scored 12 for Chatt Prep, as LaMichael Porter chipped in 11.
