With many public service careers coming to an end in August/November 2022 the term “Lame Duck” has been defined in several ways such as: (The British version was previously published on July 14, 2021.)
(1) An official in the final period of office, after the election of a successor;
(2) An ineffectual or unsuccessful person; and
(3) One that is weak or falls behind in ability or achievement.
There are several other definitions that vary from compliments to criticism.
How will the lame duck politicians exit their public position?
1. Some will silently slip into retirement with an appreciation for the opportunity to serve the community;
2. Others may fire a parting criticism towards a foe or project they did or did not support;
3. Another may declare their availability and desire to return to future public service having been bitten by the addictive political bug;
4. The possibility of becoming a well-paid consultant or employee of an entity involved in an ongoing or potential public project that they supported is another option for some retired public officials.
Other unmentioned future scenarios exist under the broad definition of Lame Duck!
