Adele Marie Baker, 91, passed away on December 20, 2023.

She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga. She was the daughter of the late W. Boyd and Marie Schmissrauter Baker. Adele graduated high school from Notre Dame and from the University of Chattanooga where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi and Mortar Board.

Adele taught first grade throughout her entire 39-year career. She began her teaching career at Clifton Hills (six years), East Brainerd (two years) Bright School (16 years), Woodmore (four years) and finished her career at Hixson Elementary (11 years).

She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church (OLPH), where she faithfully served her church as a money counter for 30 years. Additionally she served at both Barger Elementary and OLPH School as a mentor and a tutor. Adele was a charter member of Alpha Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Society International, Ladies of Charity and served her community at the Chattanooga Food Bank for over 20 years. Her favorite personal hobby was growing and caring for her 30 rose bushes that she shared with countless numbers of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A receiving of friends will be held at the OLPH Church in the Holy Family Hall at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27, followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m. She will be laid to rest in a private service alongside her parents in the Forest Hills Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Adele’s memory to OLPH or Bright School.
