The Hamilton County Democratic Party will hold its biennial Reorganization Convention Saturday, March 18, at the Chattanooga Public Library.
According to HCDP Chair Rachel Campbell, convention participants must be registered to vote in Hamilton County and identify as a Democrat. They will adopt HCDP bylaws for 2023-25 and elect officers and Executive Committee members, representing the county’s 11 election districts.
“This is when we build a political infrastructure as we look toward a very busy 2024 election cycle,” Ms. Campbell said. “We see some real opportunities to begin turning Hamilton County blue next year. What we do at our convention will lay the groundwork for success at the polls.”
Registration begins at 9 a.m.; interested Democrats can also pre-register here.
Convention business will kick off at 10 a.m. – no one will be admitted after that time – and lunch will be served.
Ms. Campbell has announced plans to seek re-election as chair. Other officers running for re-election are Vice Chair Frank Maurizio, Secretary Therese Tuley and Treasurer Alix Thornhill. All of the officers are completing their first HCDP terms.
Members of standing committees will also be appointed and new caucuses will be formed. According to Ms. Campbell, those caucuses will represent the following constituencies: African American, LatinX, Women, Labor, LGBTQ+, and Youth. It’s also expected that liaisons to groups representing veterans, the county’s rural communities and climate activists will be named.
“The caucus model gives all Democrats a place to go and focus on their particular passions and skills,” said Ms. Campbell. “Not everyone wants to knock on doors or make campaign calls; now we’ll have other things they can do that address their interests and concerns.”
The HCDP website -- hamcodems.com – will have updated information going into the convention. The pre-registration link can also be found there.
