Tennessee Passes Bills Protecting Animals

  • Friday, April 28, 2023

The Tennessee State Senate by majority vote and The Tennessee State House by unanimous vote have passed two bills which will improve the lives of animals in Tennessee.

The Adequate Shelter Bill gives owners of dogs living outside a clear definition of what they are expected to provide for their canine family members: access to a fully enclosed structure; a roof for protection; solid flooring for resting; shade; provisions for food, water and bedding; and a clean environment.

Another bill which unanimously passed both chambers will require juveniles committing aggravated animal cruelty to receive a mental health evaluation by a professional.

Both bills head to Governor Lee for his signature and will become effective July 1.

A huge thank you to volunteer advocates and lawmakers for making Animal Protection a top priority in Tennessee.
