Thank You, NAACP - And Response

  • Wednesday, May 24, 2023

We have just returned from our spring vacation and looking ahead to our fall one. With the NAACP being such an influential group I am sure the beaches and hotels of Florida will be empty this fall so good deals should be abundant. We may even go to Tampa and visit the president of the group who actually lives in the state he encourages people not to come to. Hey, who cares about the thousands of hard working black people in the hospitality industry.

Here is my annual list of places to avoid this year. Don't even think about going to Memphis, St Louis, Oakland, Albuquerque and Baltimore. Coincidentally I am sure they have two things in common. They are the five most dangerous cities in the country and they are all run 100 percent by Democrats.

Safe travels to all.

Douglas Jones

* * *

I must agree with Mr. Douglas Jones recount of the top five deadliest cities in the U.S.  And number six is now Chattanooga.

Hopefully though, people that are able to critically think and understand will see that he is expressing his (fill in the blank : i.e., distaste, repugnance, aversion, or even hate) for Democrats.

Mr. Jones is comparing apples to oranges, and using what would appear to be a reasonable argument regarding black workers in Florida to imply the overall benefits of the NAACP recommendation are more important to Florida’s black workers (already there) than to the remainder of any black population intending to visit Florida.  Yes, unfortunately, there is collateral damage for the greater good.

The NAACP recommendation to not visit Florida is a statewide assessment.  It is not an assessment of dangerous cities.  That’s the apples to oranges comparison.

The recommendation reads: "Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals. Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color."

Using Mr. Jones reasoning regarding cities, and elevating “hostility” to “danger” as he does, since Chattanooga and Memphis are in Tennessee, African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals should not visit Tennessee.

What now is especially ironic is that while Memphis is a Democratically controlled city, Chattanooga is a Republican controlled city, and Tennessee is a Republican controlled State.

Does Tennessee need a warning from the NAACP similar to Florida?
