Rachel Howell, a beloved woman known for her unwavering optimism and dedication to her family, peacefully passed away on May 24, 2023 surrounded by family at the age of 93.

She was born on March 9, 1930, in Fayetteville, Ga., and leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and craftsmanship that will forever be cherished by those who knew her.

Rachel was the last surviving member of the Bryant and Ruth Betsill family of Fayetteville and was raised and learned life values on the family farm. Her upbringing instilled in her a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. Rachel's life was centered around her immediate and extended family, and she found great joy and fulfillment in raising her children and maintaining cherished relationships through visits, phone calls and Facebook. She and her late husband, Roland (Bo) Autry Howell, created a warm and inviting atmosphere in their beautiful home on the hill, where they welcomed countless friends and family members throughout the years. Together, they built a strong foundation of love and support that extended far beyond their immediate household.

Rachel's faith played an important role in her life, and she found solace and community at her cherished Harrison United Methodist Church. She was a devoted member, finding comfort and strength in her Christian beliefs. Rachel's faith guided her through life's challenges and allowed her to spread kindness and compassion to those around her.

In addition to her roles as a wife and mother, Rachel pursued her passion for quilting as a long-time member of the Chattanooga Quilt Guild. For many years, she lovingly crafted custom quilts for numerous individuals and causes, sharing her talent and creating beautiful works of art that brought comfort and joy to others. Her meticulous attention to detail and dedication to her craft will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to receive one of her treasured quilts.

Rachel was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Bo, daughters Sandra Howell and baby Rachel Howell, grandson Christopher Floyd, and son-in-law John Ging. She was also preceded in death by parents Bryant and Ruth Harper Betsill, and her sisters and brothers, Katherine Banks, Myra Whitehead, Tiller Betsill, Demaris Betsill, Sally Maxwell, Alex Betsill, Warren Betsill, and Jane Dyer.

Rachel is survived by her daughter Patsy Ging, son Joe Howell (Star), her grandchildren Erica Eubank (William), Evan Howell (Kristin), Ben Ging (Nicole), Pete Howell, and Jodie Manning (Derek), and her great-grandchildren Will E, Nathan H, Autry G, Piper G, Jack H, Lily M, Jack M, and Olivia H.

Rachel Howell will be remembered as a woman of faith, a dedicated wife, a loving mother, a talented quilter, and a beacon of hope in the lives of those who knew her. Her legacy of love, strength, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends for generations to come. A special thanks is extended to Rachel’s long-time caregiver, Rhonda Waddell, and her granddaughter Erica for their unfailing support during the last years of her life.

A memorial service to celebrate Rachel's life will be held on May 31, at Harrison United Methodist Church, 5621 Highway 58, Harrison, Tn. 37341, at 11:30 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10 a.m.

A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Ave., Chattanooga. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Harrison United Methodist Church in Rachel's memory.

May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory be a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
