Chattanooga Charter School of Excellence High has named Kelli Fulton as its school leader. Ms. Fulton is a visionary educator with several years of experience in leadership. Most recently she worked as an assistant principal at The Howard School and as a principal at Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy.
Chattanooga Charter School of Excellence High is a co-ed charter school that will be opening with ninth and tenth grade scholars this year. It is intentionally small so that it may offer a “small school community” feel, which allows the school to personalize the educational experience for its scholars. The school is "a place, where we partner with parents, to build a better tomorrow for our scholars through providing opportunity, academic discipline, rigorous instruction, and personal excellence," said officials.
About the school:
Located in the South Chattanooga community of Alton Park, the newly renovated high school is at the site of the former Franklin Middle School, 201 E. 37th St. Any 9th or 10th grade scholar can apply to attend the tuition-free public charter school. Unlike its elementary and middle charter schools, where scholars are grouped by gender at each grade level, male and female high school scholars will attend classes together. Transportation is free to all students who live at least one mile away from campus. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are provided free of cost.
The school uses “Leader in Me,” which is an award-winning, evidence-based, comprehensive leadership model implemented in over 5,000 schools globally that empowers scholars to be leaders, equipped with life skills required to succeed in a global economy. It creates a culture of trust, engagement and scholar empowerment, and aligns systems to drive results in academics. “Leader in Me” positively impacts schools by showing decreased discipline issues, improvements in communication, and students taking more responsibility and showing leadership skills, which in turn has a positive effect on school culture and academics.
CCSE High School offers a STEM curriculum that includes flight, drone, and laser technology. The STEM-education program fosters creativity and collaboration in learning, while focusing on careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It also offers the Teaching as a Profession program. The TAP program is designed for scholars who desire to pursue careers in the education and training fields, such as becoming a teacher, school counselor, trainer, librarian, or speech-language pathologist. TAP covers classroom professionalism, ethics, policies, and communication. Scholars will fulfill internships and, upon completion of the program, be prepared to pursue advanced training at a college level.
As the school expands, CCSE High will be adding ROTC, Cosmetology, and Dual Enrollment. These programs will promote future academic and career readiness success.
With continuing growth of the CCSE campuses (including elementary and middle charter schools), there is an overwhelming demand from current scholars to play sports. As a result, CCSE High has partnered with Brainerd High School to allow its scholars to compete on the following BHS sports teams: football, baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, soccer, track & field, and wrestling.
CCSE High also offers the following clubs: Art, Robotics, Culinary Arts, Theater, Dance, Yearbook, and Student Government. Current elective offerings are Music, Chorus, Physical Education & Wellness, and Spanish. The schools expects to add electives, as the school expands one grade level per year to 12th grade.
