UTC To Host Quantum Technology Workshop June 23-25

  • Friday, June 13, 2025
A growing national and global focus on quantum technology is finding a collaborative hub in Chattanooga.

Later this month, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will welcome internationally recognized scientists, researchers and industry leaders for a three-day event aimed at exploring how quantum systems can help shape the future of computing, sensing, simulation and communication.

The Quantum Technology Workshop, hosted June 23-25 at UTC’s Multi-Disciplinary Research Building (701 E.
M.L. King Blvd.), is presented by the Quantum Center at the UTC Research Institute . Workshop sessions will explore a wide range of quantum topics, including algorithm development, hardware challenges, simulation techniques and near-term applications in industry.

More than 20 featured speakers from across academia, national laboratories and industry are expected to participate, with participants representing institutions such as Oak Ridge National Laboratory, IBM, Harvard University, the University of Waterloo, Hamburg University, TVA and four quantum companies—including IonQ. UTC researchers and graduate students will also present posters and host lab tours during the event.

The Quantum Technology Workshop schedule and speaker list can be found at go.utc.edu/quantum-workshop-25.

In addition to technical talks, the event schedule includes:
• A June 23 poster session showcasing quantum research across academic and industry sectors.
• A June 24 panel discussion on real-world applications of quantum technology in partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, EPB and TVA.
• UTC-hosted lab tours on June 25, giving visitors the chance to learn more about the research, resources and infrastructure powering the Quantum Center’s local and national initiatives.

Officials said, "The workshop builds on momentum established by the UTCRI Quantum Center, a cross-disciplinary research hub launched in 2024 to develop and apply quantum technologies through both fundamental science and industry collaboration. The Center’s work spans quantum computing, machine learning, secure communication, quantum memory, metrology and next-generation materials research supporting UTC’s growing role in quantum innovation and workforce development."

“The Quantum Technology Workshop is an example of exactly what the UTC Research Institute does best—convene some of the best and brightest researchers in the country to advance some of the most powerful technologies in existence,” said Dr. Mina Sartipi, executive director of UTCRI. “The future of quantum is taking shape in real time right now, and I’m so proud of Dr. Rick Mukherjee and his team for making sure that Chattanooga is at the forefront of this movement. We are excited to learn together where this remarkable technology will take us next.”

The Quantum Technology Workshop is sponsored by EPB Quantum, Tennessee Valley Authority, IBM and the Chattanooga Quantum Collaborative.
