Another district championship was put in the books last night as Signal Mountain and the Lady Eagles welcomed the Soddy Daisy Lady Trojans to their home field. This would be the second time they faced each other this season, but this would leave a lot on the line for the District 6-AA final. Each team had made their mark this season with impressive winning records. Signal Mountain would go into this game 10-6-1 and Soddy Daisy with a record of 9-6-2. Still there would only be one team to come out of this as victors and there was no doubt from the beginning that team would be Signal Mountain with a score of 7-0.
Emmaline Bradley-Shoup, who showed an outstanding performance with two late goals in the game, spoke after the game and expressed her thoughts on the win and the emotions of the game.
“We are just excited,” said Bradley-Shoup. “We are trying to get back to where we were last year and trying to make it just as far as we were last year. I think our mentality going into this game is everything. We need to play as hard as we can. Our coach doesn’t like us to say oh we are playing this team; it will be an easy win. We just want to look at it as the same game for everyone. I think we have a good team mentality, and everyone is routing for each other. Having a goal to me is not just an individual thing. Having a team that is built around you is a really nice feeling. Knowing that you are apart of that is really ensuring.”
The game began and the Lady Eagles were relentless from the start. They had plenty of skill in every position. Especially from their right back Tessa Roberson who would control the field with both her distribution and attacking prowess. Roberson would score the first goal of the game after a corner would put the ball at her feet and she finished it quickly. Another goal would be scored later in the half by Savanna Filar after she won the ball and made her way through the defense to make it 2-0. The Lady Trojans struggled to find an attack the entire game. However, defensively they held their ground in the first half to keep the score low.
Tessa Roberson, who played phenomenally on both sides of the ball and contributed two goals and an assist, talked after the game about
“I think that we played really well,” said Roberson. “We played Soddy Daisy at the beginning of this year and I just don’t think that we had energy. In our warmups we all came together and had positivity throughout the whole field and that made us do our best. I think this has been my favorite group ever. Our seniors are so encouraging, and we have always fit so well together. We have always been really close. I am really going to miss them because they are so encouraging, and they were always successful cause they were building positivity with everybody. Especially against other teams, we just always have good sportsmanship with each other. With this being our rival team and district finals there was a lot of tension on the field. I definitely don’t think I could have done it without the other defenders in the back telling me where to be. Everyone combining with me up front I think it is definitely a team effort.”
The second half would be full of goals as Signal Mountain could do no wrong. Five more goals would be put past the Lady Trojan defense. The first of these would be a goal by Mae Britt in the box with a strong pass from Tessa Roberson. Immediately following this would be a great shot and goal Adi Regrutto from midfield. After the lead got bigger, Signal Mountain made some substitutions that would also show the strength and depth of their team. Roberson would score again from another successful corner kick and Emmaline Bradley-Shoup would find the back of the net twice with one from outside the box. The game would come to an end with a final score of 7-0 making the Lady Eagles the District 6-AA champions.
