A two-base wild pitch drove in the winning run for the Blue Team in the first game of the Mocs Blue-Gold Series Wednesday night at Frost Stadium. Blue beat Gold 2-1 in Game One of the three-game series.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Shayna Glass doubled to the fence in left field. Another out later, a wild pitch sent Glass to third. It was deflected into the third base dugout and Glass was awarded home to put the Blue Team up 2-1.
Gold put a pair of runners on in the seventh, but a run down between home and third and a strikeout ended the threat.
Abby Orr led off the inning with a walk and stole second. She advanced to third on a groundout to second. Abi Bunt reached on a fielder’s choice, but Orr got caught in a run down. Bunt was nearly caught in a run down of her own, but safely took third.
Taylor Long struck out her eighth batter to end the game.
The scoring got started in the second by the Blue Team on an error to send Glass home for the first run.
With one out in the inning, Glass singled over third into short left field. Raven Jones followed with a single through the left side putting runners at first and second. In the next at bat, Jones was thrown out at second on an attempted double play. Grace Kramschuster reached first on the fielder’s choice and took second on a throwing error that sent Glass home from third.
Gold struck back in the top of the third, tying the game on an RBI single from Abi Pikas.
Izzy Carlyle led off with a single to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She advanced to third on a ground out to second and scored with two outs on Pikas’ single to short.
Long went the distance for the Blue Team with eight strikeouts, three walks, two hits and one run. Glass was 2-for-2 with both runs. Camryn Cernuto went 2-for-3 and walked.
Pikas went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Gold Team and Carlyle had the other hit for her squad in two at bats with a run scored. Peja Goold started the game and went four innings with four strikeouts, two walks. Riley Lamb went two innings and faced 11 batters, allowing one run on two hits.
The Mocs return to the diamond Thursday for Game Two of the series. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.
