Lee University Percussion Ensemble
The Lee University Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Professor of Percussion Dr. Andy Harnsberger and Instructor of Percussion Dr. Caitlin Jones, will host its fall concert on Monday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Pangle Hall. The concert will feature guest artist, Dr. Gene Fambrough, the assistant director of bands and professor of percussion at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The performance will include pieces such as “Trio per Uno,” by Nebojsa Zivkovic; “Omnes Trio,” by Andrea Venet; “Marimba Quartet,” by Daniel Levitan; and “Sculpture 3,” by Rudiger Pawassar.
Dr. Fambrough directs UAB’s Percussion Ensemble, Steel Band, Drumline, Blazer Pep Band, and assists with UAB’s band program. He also served as the marching percussion editor for Percussive Notes, the official journal of the Percussive Arts Society. He has various published compositions, including “Occam’s Razor,’ “Shadowfax,” and “Where Thou Art—That—Is Home.”
“This semester’s program consists of incredibly demanding music, both technically and musically,” said Dr. Harnsberger. “I am very proud of the work these students have done to achieve this level of musicianship.”
The Percussion Ensemble performs a wide variety of music written expressly for percussion, which allows students to experience a variety of music including contemporary genres, world music, and improvisation. Selections range from chamber works for three to four performers to works utilizing many instruments. The group presents fall and spring concerts annually.
Along with conducting percussion ensemble, Dr. Harnsberger is in demand as a recitalist and clinician across the country and internationally, presenting clinics and masterclasses at as many as 40 universities per year. He is also a performing artist and clinician for Malletech Instruments and Mallets, Remo Drum Heads, Sabian Cymbals, Ltd., and Grover Pro Percussion.
Dr. Jones is a professional percussionist who has an active career as a performer and educator. In 2020, Dr. Jones gave the world premiere of “The Long Road” for solo marimba by Dr. Harnsberger and professionally recorded this work with GreenHaus Productions. She has presented at Percussive Arts Society Days of Percussion and throughout the U.S. on various topics, including health and wellness for musicians.
