Legal Aid Of East Tennessee To Offer Free Name Change Clinic

  • Wednesday, April 3, 2024

Legal Aid of East Tennessee will hold a free Virtual Name Change Clinic via Zoom at 4:30 p.m. on April 11.

Pre-registration is required, and the deadline for this is Wednesday, April 10.

You may pre-register by phoning the firm’s Chattanooga branch at 423 402-4766.

After the Virtual Clinic, Chattanooga area participants can gather at the fifth floor of The Edney on April 16, from 10 a.m. through 1 p.m. During that block of time, attorneys will provide free printing of documents, notaries, and last-minute support and advice on filing. Financial assistance for filing fees may be available through partners involved in this endeavor.

“The name change process can be daunting,” said LAET Attorney and Director of the Pro Bono Program, Caitlin Torney. “This clinic and subsequent in-person meeting at the Edney is an opportunity for those interested in exploring a name change to learn all the steps, have attorneys walk them through the steps, and potentially have their filing fees covered!”

Ms. Torney went on to stress pre-registration by April 10, was mandatory but simple. “By the cut-off date, interested parties just need to call us at 423 402-4766 to pre-register. It’s just that easy.”

The Name Change Clinic is a collaborative effort between LAET and the Chattanooga Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association: Young Lawyers Division, the Chattanooga Trans Liberation Collective, and the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands.

LAET provides civil legal representation free of charge across 26 counties. Its mission is to strengthen communities and change lives through high-quality legal services. Its vision is an East Tennessee where justice is a community value, and no one faces a legal problem alone.
