The bottom of the Lee University batting order had six hits, scored seven runs and drove in four runs as the Flames defeated Trevecca Nazarene University 14-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Larry Carpenter Stadium. The seven-inning, run-rule victory improved Lee’s 15th-ranked record 26-9 and dropped Trevecca to 16-11.
The Flames will return to Gulf South Conference action on Friday and Saturday, hosting the University of West Alabama. Friday’s nine-inning contest is slated for 6 p.m. Saturday’s doubleheader will get underway at 1 p.m.
and will serve as host to all the little league and travel players from the Bradley County area.
Brantley Cutler, hitting in the number nine hole, had two hits, scored twice and collected a RBI. Riley Black, batting eighth, enjoyed one of his best days at the plate. He had a double, single, scored three times and knocked in a run. Not to be outdone, seventh-hole hitter Josiah Miller blasted a long two-run homer in the seventh inning. He completed his day with a pair of walks and two runs scored.
It took a while for Lee to get its 16-hit attack going. The Trojans moved on top 1-0 in the first inning before Matthew Batts delivered a three-run homer over the left-center-field wall to make it a 3-1 game. Trevecca tied the game at three in the fourth but Lee came right back with Black’s RBI double and Cutler’s run scored single to put the Flames back up 5-3. They never trailed again.
In the seventh inning, Lee sent 12 hitters to the plate and the contest ended on a double by Luke Collier that plated two runs, making it a 14-4 game. Cam Suto had three hits including a double. He scored twice and drove in two more runs. Brandon Daniels added two RBI and a run scored. JJ Williams also chipped in with three hits and a RBI. Mark Underwood and Isaiah French entered the game and scored a run while French drew a bases-loaded walk to drive home a score.
Lee used four pitchers in the win. Frankie Volkers started and worked the first three innings. He allowed two hits and an earned run. Zachary Lawson (1-2) got credit for the pitching win. In two innings, he allowed three hits and two earned runs. Colt McKibben followed for an inning and David White also followed for a solid inning.
Trevecca finished with nine hits. Cole McCallum, Josh Griffin and David Milam collected two hits each. All three had a double while Griffin and Milam drove home runs. Carter Warner and Andru Becker added a hit and a RBI in the loss.
The Trojans used five pitchers. Daniel Dewey was the starter. He pitched three innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs. Preston Drebes (0-2) followed and was charged with the loss. He surrendered four hits and two earned runs. The Flames touched James Dickson for two hits and five earned runs in his inning of work.
