Southern Adventist Goldwater Scholar
Southern Adventist University biophysics major John Hargy has been named a 2024 Goldwater Scholar by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship & Excellence in Education Foundation. The Barry Goldwater Scholarship, named for the former U.S. senator, encourages research careers in STEM and is awarded to college students who intend to pursue research careers in engineering, mathematics, and the natural sciences. Each scholar is awarded up to $7,500 per academic year for up to two years of undergraduate study. This year, out of an estimated pool of more than 5,000 students, 438 were chosen to be Goldwater scholars.
“The university is very proud of John for being named as a Goldwater Scholar,” says Robert Young, PhD, senior vice president for Academic Administration at Southern. “This award is a testament to the motivation he has for pursuing a career in research. He is building skills that will serve him well throughout his career.”
Hargy plans to pursue an MD/PhD to become a physician-scientist. “Research, especially biomedical research, is an investigation into God's creation,” he says. “Knowing that my research will have a positive impact on patients is extremely fulfilling.”
