George Hankins Adamson, born in Greeneville, Tennessee, died Thursday afternoon at The Woodlands at Furman in Greenville, South Carolina.

George, or “Miss George” as she was known to friends and staff, was 102 years old. Mrs. Adamson moved to Greenville, South Carolina with her sister Alice to be close to family. After several years at the Woodlands at Furman she was somewhat of a minor celebrity and always one to welcome new residents.

George was a member of Tyner United Methodist Church in Chattanooga, despite her relocation to South Carolina. She also attended Travelers Rest United Methodist Church in Travelers Rest, S.C. for a time.

George worked many years as bookkeeper for The Bonny Oaks School in Chattanooga alongside her husband and Bonny Oaks School superintendent Malcolm Adamson. She often said she was fortunate to be able to consider the many children of Bonny Oaks as her own.

A loyal sports fan of the University of Tennessee football program and especially the Atlanta Braves, she followed the teams for years. A highlight was when she had the opportunity to attend a Braves baseball game in person only to find herself featured on the Jumbo-tron during the game.

Mrs. Adamson was the daughter of the late Theron Rice and Chlodia Harmon Hankins and is predeceased by her sisters, Margaret Hankins and Alice Hankins, husband, Malcolm M. Adamson, and son, Michael M. Adamson.

She is survived by her son, Marion J. Adamson of Nashville; grandson, Stuart E. Adamson, also of Nashville; daughter-in-law Bonnie Adamson of Greenville, S.C.; and two granddaughters, Jennifer (Chad) Adamson Lawson of Tryon, N.C., and Stephanie (Dustin) Adamson Williams of Hillsborough, N.C.

A Service of Celebration will take place at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time at North Chapel. Entombment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to bonnyoaksfoundation.org

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory, and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, Tn. 37343.
