James Hugh Cawthon
James Hugh Cawthon, of Ooltewah, passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.
James was born in Nashville, Tennessee to the late George and Frances Cawthon. He was raised in Nolensville, Tennessee and graduated from Franklin High School. James served our country for four years in the Navy during Vietnam, and was awarded the National Defense Service, Good Conduct Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. He met his wife Bartha while serving in California. They lived in several states before settling back in Nolensville, where he raised three children. They then relocated to Ooltewah, Tennessee.
He loved life, spending time with family and friends, telling stories, and never met a stranger. He loved Jesus and taught his children that God loves them.
James was a carpenter by trade, was a community advocate, loved country music, loved to laugh and was strong in his faith in Jesus Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Bartha Cawton; and a daughter, Deborah Cawthon.
James is survived by his son, Daniel (Andrea) Cawthon; daughter, Lisa (Raymond) Wright; grandchildren, Ryan (Kitty) and Jonathan Cawthon, Jackson, Ashlyn and Caroline Mattox; great grandchildren, Rory and Ginny Cawthon; brothers, George (Ruth) and Jack Cawthon; sister, Sarah Chisenhall; several nieces and nephews and many special friends at Morning Pointe of Greenbriar Cove. James loved his time living at Morning Pointe of Greenbriar Cove.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
A Celebration of James’ life will follow at 3 p.m. on Monday at the North Chapel. Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
