Roy Johnson
It is with great sadness that the family of Roy Johnson announces his passing. Roy Ernest Johnson, 80 years old, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. Roy was born in Atlanta, on October 18, 1944.
After graduating from Southwest High School in Atlanta, he continued his education at Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering in 1966 and his masters in 1969, graduating with highest honors as a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. During his almost 50-year career in engineering, he worked in Atlanta, GA; Dayton, OH; and most notably in Chattanooga. He was a longtime project engineer for Combustion Engineering, ABB and a principal engineer for Westinghouse Nuclear Division. He retired from Westinghouse in 2017. His career also included teaching engineering courses part-time in the evenings at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Roy was an avid problem solver not only in his career but also in retirement. He was a voracious reader, Jeopardy enthusiast, and an expert at solving the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzles. In retirement he enjoyed being a snowbird - splitting his time between Signal Mountain, and Daytona Beach Shores, Fl.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Synder Johnson and Roy Ernest Johnson, Sr.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Judy Wade Johnson; his daughters Amy Johnson (Mills) Stansberry of Greenville, SC; and Margaret Ellen Johnson of Cape Cod, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Griffin and Wade Stansberry; sibling Robert (Debbie) Johnson; and numerous nephews and niece.
As a faithful husband, loving father, grandfather, and brother, he will be dearly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, at Signal Crest United Methodist Church, Signal Mountain, Tn., with a reception to follow.
Heartfelt thanks to Hearth Hospice, and to the nurses, CNAs, PTs, and staff at Soddy Daisy Healthcare Center. Your love, compassion and expertise in caring for Roy was exceptional and will forever be appreciated.
