Election day is roughly two weeks away, and we’re closing in on a decision. So, I wanted to take a few minutes and write a letter to thank my former opponents, whom I’m now asking for their vote. I’m reflecting on what I have experienced over this three-month journey, and I realize how much they shifted my focus and refreshed my perspective.
Jenn Gregory stressed we must include people of color in decisions about affordable housing and developmental patterns. I began this election with the intent to do good, but it’s important to remember to slow down; don’t be so eager to help that you forget to ask. During recent canvasses with the Shepherd and Airport communities, I heard over and over again: the people who use these developments must have a seat at the table. Progress is more than elected officials and developers “doing what’s best” for the community.
Mark Holland reminded me service must have a heart. During a recent ride with the CPD Homeless Engagement Team, my heart was heavy thinking about Mark’s call for broadening wraparound services for job placement, mental health and addiction recovery in our growing homeless population. Fact: the city of Chattanooga does not have a homeless shelter. Also, private homeless shelters cannot take in handicap people, leaving the most vulnerable to sleep in their wheelchair on the sidewalk. Finding a solution must include empathy.
Regardless of April 8, I have been honored to advocate for District 6 with both of you. I look forward to serving this district to the best of my ability, being a voice for every constituent, and incorporating new ideas as often as possible.
Now, go vote April 8.
