UTC Softball Travels To Furman For Weekend Series

The Chattanooga softball team is in the middle of Southern Conference action, playing the fourth conference series on the road at Furman this weekend. The Mocs and Paladins will meet up for a doubleheader Saturday and a single game on Sunday.

The Mocs lead the series 84-28 dating back to 1994.
UTC is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings. The Mocs swept the series in Greenville, S.C., last season with two shutouts with one a run rule victory.

The Mocs won their opening SoCon series 2-1 against UNCG, swept Mercer in a double header (third game was canceled due to weather) and fell 1-2 against Western Carolina. At the plate, UTC is batting .297 and has 89 multi-base hits including 26 home runs, 55 doubles and eight triples. They have 157 RBI and 175 runs scored. Camryn Cernuto leads the team with a  .376 batting average. She has scored 28 runs, has 11 RBI, two doubles and two triples. She leads the team with 14 steals. Olivia Lipari is second on the team in batting average at .343. She leads the Mocs with 12 doubles, has five home runs and 28 RBI. She has been walked 26 times this season and needs just one more to tie the Mocs career record (110).

In the circle, the Mocs have a team 2.98 ERA. Chattanooga’s pitching staff leads the league with 280 strikeouts and is ranked 10th in the NCAA with a 7.73 strikeouts per seven innings. Peja Goold leads the SoCon with 146 strikeouts and is ranked 14th in the NCAA. She has a league-best 14 wins, 13 complete games and five shutouts (seventh in the NCAA). Taylor Long is 9-1 and second in the SoCon with 109 strikeouts.

The Paladins are looking to halt a four-game losing skid. Furman took two of three from ETSU but was swept by UNCG in their series. The fourth loss in the streak was a midweek non-conference matchup against Queens. At the plate Furman is hitting .242 with eight home runs, 58 doubles and four triples. Caitlin Goldwait has a team-best .352 batting average with seven doubles. Sylvia Burroughs is second at .342 and has a team-high 21 runs batted in and three home runs. In the circle, the Paladins have a team 4.27 ERA led by Emme Buzhardt (3.61).
