Covenant Baseball Drops One Run Loss To Piedmont

  • Saturday, April 5, 2025

The Covenant baseball team and Piedmont played their tightest game of the weekend on Saturday, but it was the Lions who held firm at the end to earn the sweep of the Scots.

Final: Covenant 3, Piedmont 4 Covenant took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Zeke Gilbertscored Roby McClarnon, who led off with a single, with an RBI groundout.

The Lions capitalized on two errors by the Scots in the second inning to tie the game at one.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the third inning, Sam Cecil grounded into a double-play, scoring a run while doing so.

The next batter flew out to center field as the Lions limited the damage to just one run scored for the Scots.

Piedmont tied the game in the fifth inning with an RBI single to second base.

The Lions had a big chance to score more runs with the bases-loaded and no outs, however two strikeouts and an RBI groundout mixed in between, limited the damage, but gave them the lead at 3-2.

In the seventh inning, Piedmont made it 4-2 using a two-out RBI single through the right side.
Covenant had runners at the corners with one out in the bottom of the frame, but a lineout to second base followed by a batter's interference call ended the threat.

Luke Carter drove in Ben Johnson in the eighth inning with an RBI single to center field as Covenant was back within one run.

The Scots were retired in order in the ninth, yielded on by two web-gem defensive plays from the Piedmont defense.
