Welcoming an exchange student into my home in Chattanooga, has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Since hosting my first student from Argentina, I’ve opened my doors to five others from around the world—Argentina, Thailand, Spain, Germany, and Japan. Each has enriched my perspective in ways I never expected. Hosting is more than providing meals and lodging—it’s about fostering cultural exchange and personal growth.
Youth For Understanding (YFU), one of the oldest and most respected global exchange organizations, connects families with eager students ready to experience life in another country. Founded in 1951, YFU has partners in over 60 countries, advancing intercultural understanding, respect, and social responsibility through immersive educational exchanges.
As a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) scholarship alum, I know firsthand the life-changing impact of studying abroad. My year in Germany shaped my worldview, taught me resilience, and deepened my commitment to international education. Hosting and mentoring students through YFU allows me to extend that opportunity to others.
Each of my students has brought a unique perspective to my family and my community, from sharing Argentinian matte to celebrating Spanish and German traditions, learning Japanese phrases, and engaging in discussions on world politics. They don’t just witness American life—they actively participate in it. All five of my international children attended East Hamilton High School, excelling in academics, joining school sports and music groups, engaging in the youth group at Christ United Methodist Church, and making lifelong friendships.
Chattanooga is a vibrant setting for cultural exchange, blending Southern hospitality with global curiosity. The city's welcoming schools, active arts scene, and outdoor adventures provide an ideal environment for students to immerse themselves in American life.
Exchange programs through YFU extend beyond hosting—they offer American high school students the chance to study abroad in many of our partner countries. These programs empower young Americans to become global citizens, develop independence, and gain a deeper appreciation for the world’s diversity. Scholarships make these experiences accessible to students from all backgrounds. Several recent CBYX scholarship recipients from Chattanooga are actively participating in exchanges—one is currently abroad, while another is set to begin their experience this fall. Many local alumni have also benefited from this prestigious program, underscoring our community’s strong dedication to international education.
If you’ve ever thought about hosting, now is the perfect time. YFU offers comprehensive support, including orientation events, local coordinators, and 24/7 assistance. Host families don’t need to fit a traditional mold—whether you’re single, retired, or have children, there’s a student who would thrive in your home. YFU students arrive prepared, with their own spending money and health insurance, allowing host families to focus on sharing their lives rather than covering expenses.
At a time when divisions dominate headlines, personal connections across cultures foster understanding and peace. By opening your home, you open minds—and ultimately, the world.
