City Of Soddy Daisy Launches Shade & Play Initiative

  • Monday, August 25, 2025

The City of Soddy-Daisy announces the launch of its Shade & Play Initiative 2030. Hot summer days limit one’s ability to stay and play at the city’s parks, so the city plans to make public spaces more comfortable and accessible during the region’s hot summer months.

Through this initiative, the city is committed to installing 10 new shade structures by 2030—including pavilions, shade sails, umbrellas, and other types of covers—across local parks and recreation areas. Three shade installations are fully funded and scheduled for completion during this fiscal year.

In addition to the new structures, the city will enhance existing shaded areas by adding tables and benches beneath existing tree canopies. To expand natural shade, the plan also includes planting 50 new trees throughout parks and public spaces by 2030—helping to cool recreation areas while keeping Soddy-Daisy green.

“We want our residents to enjoy our parks year-round,” said City Manager Burt Johnson. “Shade is not just a luxury—it's a necessity for health, safety, and accessibility.”

This effort builds on Soddy-Daisy’s broader vision to create more welcoming and resilient public spaces.
