Rock City To Preserve Historic Dalton, Ga., Barn

  • Friday, February 8, 2002

A "See Rock City" barn built in 1948 and declared a historic site in
1980 is being moved from its current location in Whitfield County to Walker County in a field below Rock City's Lover's Leap.

The barn is currently at the intersection of Tibbs Road and Valley Lane in Dalton. It is visible from I-75 near milepost 335 on the northbound side.

Work begins to dismantle the barn on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at approximately 10:00 a.m. and will continue for a couple of weeks before it is
moved and reassembled below Lover's Leap.

Rock City officials said when Dalton Central Church of Christ announced plans to build a new church on the Dalton property, the future of the barn was questionable.

They said Bill Chapin, president of Rock City, wanted to save the barn and worked with the church to make sure the barn was preserved.

Graham Vannoy Construction Company and Walden Log Homes will be doing the work.
