Iowa State Wrestlers Undefeated In UTC Quad

  • Saturday, November 29, 2003

The fourth-ranked Iowa State wrestling team lived up to its billing Saturday taking three dual matches at the UTC Quad at Maclellan Gym. The Cyclones defeated Chattanooga 27-9, Virginia Tech 30-12 and Carson-Newman 42-6.

Virginia Tech (3-1) needed a victory in the final match of the day to edge the Mocs 20-18 and take two of three duals on the day. The Mocs defeated Carson-Newman 32-10, while the Eagles (0-3) lost all three duals.

“We still have a lot of work to do,” UTC Head Coach Terry Brands said. “We are so inconsistent. We had some good efforts today, and I don’t want to take away from that.

“We are thankful that Coach Douglas and the Iowa State program, as well as Virginia Tech and Carson-Newman made the trip to Chattanooga to help make this a big wrestling event in our city. We are trying to turn this area into a premiere wrestling community, and with today’s crowd, we went a long way toward that goal.”

UTC junior Josh Ward shined for the Mocs, earning two victories. Ward posted a 13-7 win over Iowa State’s Nels Matson at 174, and edged Carson-Newman’s Nathon Jones 6-3.

Matt Pitts (125), Michael Keefe (141), Jake Yost (157), Jon Sioredas (165) and John Davis (184) also picked up two wins apiece for the Mocs. Josh Keefe and Sioredas each recorded pins.

The Mocs, now 1-3 in duals, will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, Dec. 12 to take on 16th-ranked Northern Iowa.
