McCallie L. "Lonnie" Smith Sr., 76 of Chattanooga, died at his home Monday, May 17, 2004.

He was an active member of New Haven Baptist Church and an ordained deacon. He was a United States Navy veteran serving during World War II and was a participant on the U.S.S. Mt. McKinley during the first underwater atomic bomb testing at Bikini Islands. He was a gospel recording artist and songwriter. He was retired from Modern Woodmen of America after many years of service.

He was preceded in death by two sons, David Arthur Smith and James Stephen "Stevie" Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathleen "Kat" Smith; one son and daughter-in-law, McCallie "Mack" L. and Julie Smith, Jr. of Athens, Ala.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Susie and Charlie Abernathy, Kim and Tommy Baker, and Tina and Bud Shelton, all of Ooltewah; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the Valley View Chapel with Rev. Bill Broom officiating.

Burial will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Billy Smith, Joey Tubbs, Greg Holsonback, Matt Brogden, Ed Winkelman and Butch Ellis serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 7414 Old Lee Highway.
