Chattanooga is now blessed with a delightful seafood restaurant, Easy Seafood Company. The Big Easy is a euphemism for New Orleans signifying the low country lifestyle; simple, slow, laid back, “easy.”
The huge blackboard, almost the size of a movie screen, which takes several employees to hoist with ropes up the rear wall, features their daily specials. The day we were there the specials included sautéed halibut, grilled mahi mahi, Gulf pompano, grilled salmon, and a combination dinner of oysters, shrimp, and crab legs. The menu shows a definite New Orleans flare with items such as Creole rice, Creole slaw, or Creole brisket. Other Cajun favorites are chicken and andouille sausage gumbo, crawfish, red beans and rice, and Po-Boys.
We began our meal with a dozen freshly shucked oysters. The oysters were delicious; fresh, clean, and easy to remove from the shell. It was a real treat to have these succulent shellfish right here in Chattanooga because I usually only get oysters at the beach.
We also had a bucket of hot “peel and eat” shrimp. Our entrées were the combination special and the pompano. The pompano was as good as you would get at Brennans or The Court of Two Sisters in the French Quarter. Robert Lee and I enjoyed the orange tart for desert while Festus and Nathan, our oldest son, had another draft and dozen oysters.
The old historic building which houses Easy Seafood is very interesting. Make a point of looking at the ceiling when you dine there. Owner and cook, Erik Neil has done an excellent job preserving its character. The atmosphere is casual, the service attentive and the music fun. Easy Seafood is a great addition to our downtown area.
