Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will celebrate Junior Ranger Day on Saturday, May 12, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our young visitors to explore the rich history of this National Military Park,” said Superintendent Shawn Benge. “The motto of the Junior Ranger program is ‘Explore, Learn, Protect: Be a Junior Ranger.’ This can be better achieved through participation in programs such as this. I encourage all young people to participate in this program and join the growing number of Junior Rangers.”
In late 2006 a new Junior Ranger activity book was published for the National Military Park. This activity book is available free of charge to young visitors in grades 3 through 8 and includes numerous learning activities for participants as they tour the battlefields with their families. Activities in the book are crossword puzzles, artist opportunities, photo identification, and numerous other activity sheets. Information about battlefield resources and battlefield “fun facts” are also included.
On Junior Ranger Day young visitors with adult supervision can pick up the Junior Ranger activity book at any of the three locations, Chickamauga Battlefield, Point Park or Orchard Knob. After obtaining brief instructions on how to use the book, young visitors and their adult guide can begin to explore the resource.
Up to two hours should be allowed to complete the program. Upon completion of the activity book each participant will earn a Junior Ranger badge. For the first 200 successful participants, special patches, buttons, and pins will be awarded as part of a goody bag.
Participation in the Junior Ranger program is not limited to this special day. The activity book is always available at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center or the Point Park Visitor Center as you “Explore, Learn and Protect” the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.
