Bigoms Gets 8-Year Sentence In Attempted Rape

  • Monday, August 27, 2007

A man prosecutor Boyd Patterson called "a violent sexual predator" was given an eight-year prison sentence on Monday.

Criminal Court Judge Rebecca Stern ordered Tony Bigoms Jr. taken into custody to begin serving the time.

His attorney, Robin Flores, noted he already served three years while awaiting trial. He was allowed out on bond after a jury in May convicted him of sexual battery. He had been charged with the more serious offense of attempted rape.

The victim had told a Criminal Court jury that Bigoms held a knife to her and tried to rape her in May 2002.

The woman said Monday she has forgiven Bigoms, but she said, "I want him to get what's coming to him."

Prosecutor Boyd said Bigoms "moves in the dark. He's a risk to re-offend."

Bigoms was charged with the kidnapping, rape and murder of a prostitute in 2002, but he was found not guilty of those charges after a jury trial.

His record includes robbery by intimidation and two burglary counts. He served two years of a five-year term for the 1978 robbery in Atlanta.

Attorney Flores said, "He's not a Ted Bundy."

In the case involving the February 2002 death of prostitute Dinah Burney, her body was found dumped alongside Caine Avenue with a sock tied around her throat.

In the sexual battery case, the woman testified at the trial that she was afraid if Bigoms cut her with the knife that she would bleed to death because she had a catheter inserted for chemotherapy treatment for cancer.
The woman also told the jury she had undergone open heart surgery.

She said she had been asked to stay at Bigoms' aunt's house while she was out of town. She said Bigoms was also staying at the residence.

The woman said the incident happened when the aunt came back home. The aunt testified she does not believe Bigoms attacked the woman.

The alleged victim said she was in a bedroom when she felt Bigoms crawling on her and kissing her. She said he held a pocket knife to her neck after she spurned his advances.

The woman said she heard her aunt get up, and she said that caused Bigoms to temporarily halt the attack. She said he tried to pull her pants down, but she pulled them back up. She said she finally was able to get out the door and run to the aunt's bedroom.
