We recently stopped by the Cherry Street Diner at 701 Cherry Street (corner of 7th and Cherry). This has been the home of many restaurants, the first of many that I remember being the original Krystal.

The menu offers many breakfast items listed in the most unusual way I believe I have ever seen. You select your meat, then “however many items you want”. Prices range from $3.49 for a meat and one, up to $8.49 for a meat and six. Meats include bacon, ham, sausage patties or links, bologna and for $1 more, ribeye. There are fifteen items to choose from ( those items include your drink as well). Of course, you can go with a meatless breakfast for $1 less.

Other breakfast items include omelets, pancakes (including bacon cakes) and breakfast sandwiches served on either biscuit or Texas Toast. Something I like is that breakfast is served any time they are open.

Wayne ordered the Denver Omelet, being disappointed they didn’t offer a Western Omelet. It was only later that we noticed a comment on the menu “If there is anything you want and don’t’ see it on the menu feel free to ask if we can make it.” I imagine they could have made that! Omelets are served with hash browns and toast or biscuit. Grits are served on request. He did like the omelet. The biscuits were large and fluffy and the gravy had plenty of sausage.

I ordered sausage patties with a scrambled egg and grits. And – I am happy to say I actually got the extra soft scrambled egg I ordered! Those eggs would be worth another visit!

Some of the sandwiches offered include Reubens, Gyro and Patty Melts. There are also salads and daily specials with a meat and two priced at $6.99. On the day we were there, the special was pan fried pork chops.

According to their website, they cook their own corned beef for the Reubens, hand-form the burger patties each day, prepare all daily specials and sides in-house, and all cupcakes are homemade. Each day is a special soup of the day. Examples of daily specials include meat loaf, chicken cordon bleu and turkey and dressing. Vegetables are fried green beans, potato casserole, broccoli casserole, and mac and cheese. Desserts include handspun milkshakes, sundaes and specials of the day.

Hours for the Cherry Street Diner are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Check them out and let us know if you agree.
