Glass Menagerie Opener Postponed

  • Thursday, February 25, 2010

The performance schedule for Lee University’s upcoming black-box play, Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, has changed. Due to unforeseen circumstances a casting change has been necessitated and the first weekend's performances have been canceled, with the performance schedule consolidated into one weekend.

Lee University’s Department of Communication and the Arts apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause this weekend’s ticket holders. Staff members will be stationed this weekend at the Edna Minor Conn Theatre to provide full refunds for tickets or to trade tickets for one of the following weekend’s performances.

The play will be presented in the Edna Minor Conn Theater in Lee’s Vest Building at 7:30 p.m. on March 5 and 6. There will also be a matinee performance on March 7 at 2 p.m.

This classic drama, directed by Dr. Mark Burnette, centers on Amanda Wingfield, an aging southern belle. Amanda struggles to marry off her frail, withdrawn daughter Laura, while keeping her restless son Tom from leaving home.

The Glass Menagerie is a memory play, and its action is drawn from the memories of Tom Wingfield, the narrator. Amanda lives mainly in her past, telling her children frequently of her idyllic youth, while Tom works in a warehouse to support his mother and sister. Laura, who is painfully shy, finds escape in a world of glass animal figurines, her most prized possessions.

“Tennessee William’s The Glass Menagerie is an exquisite piece of theatre, with characters as delicately written as the fragile pieces of glass Laura collects in the play,” said Dr. Burnette.

All tickets for the performance are $5 and are on sale at the Dixon Center Box Office, which is open Monday-Friday from 3-6 p.m.

The Edna Minor Conn Theater is located in Room 305 of the Vest Building, on the corner of 11th Street and Ocoee.

To reach the Box Office, call 614-8343. For more information about the performances call 614-8341 or visit www.leeuniversity.edu/theatre.
