Lee Announces 2010 Winners Of The Lee, Conn And Tharp Awards

Lee University announced Tyler Franklin, Andrew MacQuarrie and Lydia Thompson Nascimento as the recipients of the 2010 F.J Lee, Charles Paul Conn and Zeno C. Tharp Awards.

Each year students are nominated for the awards by their departments and evaluated based on achievements and contributions during their time at Lee. The award winners were honored during the commissioning service on Friday, May 7.

Tyler Franklin is the recipient of the F.J. Lee Award. Established in 1968 and named in honor of the second president of Lee, this award is presented to a senior who has demonstrated high standards of integrity, leadership, service, broad campus involvement and academic excellence.

Mr. Franklin majored in political science, humanities, and Biblical and theological studies with minors in Biblical languages and philosophy.

During his time at Lee he was president of Kairos Scholars and Alpha Chi honors society. He was also a member of the Student Leadership Committee, the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature and Model United Nations. He was involved in service organizations such as the Unity Center, the Caring Place, Heartline Haiti, House of Faith Ministries and more.

Andrew MacQuarrie is the recipient of the Charles Paul Conn Award. This award is given to a graduating student who demonstrates the greatest promise of achievement in graduate or professional studies after graduating from Lee.

Mr. MacQuarrie majored in biochemistry and plans to attend medical school. He has been accepted to the medical schools at the University of Tennessee, University of Alabama and East Tennessee State University.

During his time at Lee he participated in medical missions, Alpha Phi Delta, Peer Leadership and the Student Advisory Committee. He has also authored a book, entitled Here Dead We Live, set to release on Aug. 3.

Lydia Thompson Nascimento is the recipient of the Zeno C. Tharp Award. This award is for the student who shows the most promise for a future in Christian ministry. Ms. Nascimento received her B.A. in intercultural studies with minors in TESOL and Biblical languages.

During her time at Lee, Ms. Nascimento served as an intern at the Leonard Center, participated in Crossover Ministries and helped initiate "Global Impact" week at Lee. She also served on the Missions Week planning committee and served as a student leader for benevolence labs as well as a mentor for GNST 100 course for at risk students.

She ministered beyond the Lee campus while working with the Knoxville Inner City Kids Organization and volunteering at homeless shelters in Cleveland and Atlanta. She and her husband also worked as youth pastors at Sandy Springs Church of God in Atlanta.
